Ramón Villeda Bermúdez
Demands that the forestry legislation be carefully examined

Ramón Villeda Bermúdez, a congressional representative of the Liberal Party, declared that the new Forestry Law of Protected Areas and Wildlife should be improved, discussed and carefully examined to be sure it achieves its primary function, which is "to not leave Honduras without forests."

According to the congressman, business interests should not prevail in this law. The law should "leave a country that gives oxygen through the forests to future generations of the nation."

Organizations and professionals with forestry ties are questioning whether the Forestry legislation currently being discussed by the National Congress will be harmful to Honduran interests.

The Honduran Agro-forestry Alliance (HAA) is demanding revisions to the legislation and is identifying the legislation's weaknesses and missing pieces in a round of meetings with representatives from both political parties with seats in the Congress.

The legislative draft of the Forestry Law contemplates the creation of a National Forestry Secretary, a move that Bermúdez says will require a total modification or even disappearance of the current Honduran Corporation for Forestry Development.
