"The police attacked like it was a war"
Interview with Maria de Jesús Reyes,
mother-in-law of Marcelino Miranda

You were the first person to visit Marcelino in prison?
Yes, I was

In what conditions did you find him?
They [Marcelino and Leonardo] were both beat up, mistreated. There wasn't a part of their bodies that was healthy. There were burns in their mouths, their ears, on their clothes.

How long after they were arrested did you go to visit them?
Three days later. I took them clothes, because they were arrested wearing old work clothes.

What else did you take them?
Some food, but they were too hurt to eat. Their mouths were hurt, their jaws and teeth damaged. They could not pick anything up because their hands were injured. Marcelino's rib bothered him, and Leonardo was very hurt.

Where were you when the police came?
I was in the kitchen. They were in the bedroom inside.

What happened that night?
After they took them outside, they beat them and beat them. Then they took them inside Leonardo's house for a while, and then there was a shot. I did not know what was going on. It was like a war.

What else happened?
They through tear gas grenades into the house where Leonardo's mother was sitting in her chair. The old woman cannot walk. They hit people. They fired their guns. The whole community was there, including the neighborhood watch who had come to see what was going on.

You followed Marcelino when the Police took him?
Yes. They dragged them, they put guns to their necks, they clubbed them, they dunked them in a well. I followed them until they got to Potrerillos.

What did the police say to you?
They said, "Go away, cow. Go back, old b----, or you die here." Maybe they were thinking of killing them on the way, but because I was there behind them maybe they did not kill them.
