Security Commissioner: Forensic medicine and transit police must be improved

"The new State Transit Law obligates that more specialized equipment be provided for the Departments of Forensic Medicine and Transit Police so that they will be able to determine how fast drivers are going as well as their level of intoxication," said the president of the Security Commission, Mauricio Oliva.

At present, this commission is in charge of considering what will go into the new transit legislation . "We want to develop a law that, first of all, is complient with international laws. It should be a law that supervises adequetly the state of vehicles on the road, the driving skills of motorists as well as the level of control over who receives a driver´s license.

Authorities in charge of carrying out the law will have a computerized registry of drivers in order to keep track of driving infractions that they committ as well as to verify their record.

"We also want to create a driving school that will educate people on all the things that cause the majority of accidents to happen. A study to see if it is feasible to establish a system of security for passengers and drivers has been talked about as well," Oliva explains.

In order to create a effective law, it will be necessary to revise other laws such as the Penalization of Drunkeness to ensure that persons driving under the influence will be persecuted harshly for putting the lives of innocent people in danger.

It is necessary to reduce the blood alcohol level permited, in order to toughen up on those driving under the influence. Other countries have already established such levels and there is a need for congruency around this issue at an international level.

The law will be reviewed in the next two weeks, depending on when the President of the Nacional Congress, Porfirio Lobo, opens it up for discussion. The good news is, congress members have already come to consensus to aprove the law, said the president of the Security Commission.
