uring Wednesday’s trial, a forensic expert presented security footage from Berta’s neighborhood on the night of her murder. Footage shows two vehicles, one a pickup truck and the other a car, entering and driving past Berta’s neighborhood eight times between 9pm and 11:38pm.

At 11:38, three people can be seen running from the neighborhood to an unidentifiable vehicle outside of the neighborhood’s entrance. Seconds later the vehicle turns around on the road headed towards the city center of La Esperanza.

Analysis of Douglas Bustillo’s bank account showed the purchase of a 165,000-lempira car after the murder as well as exaggerated purchases in PriceSmart. Newspaper clippings related to Berta were found in Bustillo’s possession as well as in the offices of DESA and the home of Emerson Duarte.

Three witnesses from the community of Rio Blanco testified that they supported the Agua Zarca project and had positive interactions with suspects Sergio Rodriguez and Douglas Bustillo. Two perceived the protests of COPINH negatively stating that the organization caused damage to the community. The third witness, although a member of COPINH, had a good relationship with Rodriguez and helped inform Rodriguez of the protests ahead of time.
